YOUR BEHIND THE SCENES LOOK AT FILMS NOT COMING SOON TO A THEATER NEAR YOU...This blog is dedicated to promoting the art of independent filmmaking. The films profiled here are conceived and created outside the studio system and are brought to you, the public, without the aid of a major distributor. Wednesday, December 19, 2012 I DARE???

Gracing the small screen once again...

Catch me today on KREX pimping tonight's FREE Community Cinema screening of BEAUTY IS EMBARRASSING!  This film appeals to both artists and "non-artists" (aren't we really ALL artists in our own way?) alike.  It's a funny, irreverent and ultimately uplifting look at the life and career of artist and production designer Wayne White.  Its core message:  human beings are innately creative and creativity is needed in every aspect of life.  Discover what you're passionate about, tap into your creative spirit and put yourself out into the world, regardless of what others might think.  If you believe in yourself and what you're doing, the world will follow.

Beauty is Embarrassing

Off the Grid Films takes to the airwaves today on KAFM from 12:30-1:00 MST to discuss BEAUTY IS EMBARRASSING - THE WAYNE WHITE STORY.   As a big fan of Pee-wee's Playhouse as a kid, I was fascinated to get a close look at the man responsible for creating and voicing the darkly entrancing puppets and set pieces transmitted to my starkly contrasting middle class family room every Saturday morning.

OTGF set to interview LA SOURCE producer Jordan Wagner

Another late night prepping for my interview with the producer of LA SOURCE, the story of an unassuming hero who captured the hearts of an elite community.  LA SOURCE helps us recognize the potential in each and every human being to transform the lives of those less fortunate. Trying desperately to structure an interview that will extract the essence of this cinematic odyssey.  Fending off sleep and wondering where my brain cells have escaped to...

GJ represents for REVEAL THE PATH

Despite the fact that, in typical GJ style, NO ONE bothered to purchase their tickets in advance, flooding the box office in numbers 300+ 15 minutes before the show...AND...despite the fact that my husband's work extended into the late night hours and left me desperate for child care and running out the door last minute with neither a coat and nor my new digital camera (hence the crappy iphone photos)...

Good vibes STILL managed to fill the air as REVEAL THE PATH screened for a Grand Valley audience that packed the house and left the Mesa Theater's owners scrambling for extra seats!  How perfect to host this film in the mountain biking mecca that is the Grand Valley.  I know, easy sell, right?

The second film from director Mike Dion delivered his trademark flair for blending breathtaking landscapes and intense biking sequences with meditative reflection on the spiritual side of connecting with nature and exploring the broad palette of humanity that audiences familiar with RIDE THE DIVIDE, which Dion produced, anticipated coming in.

We were honored to the share the spotlight of last night's event with members of COPMOBA and the organizers of the F-TOWN GEARDOWN, some of the many visionaries who saw in this region the potential for world-class mountain biking and whose tireless efforts are transforming that dream into reality.

Seriously.  I really need to get my circa-1994 Specialized hybrid onto REAL dirt more than once in its lifetime...

REVEAL THE PATH left viewers hungering for the thrill of the ground-level adventure that only biking will satiate. The moviegoers I spoke with left the theater feeling inspired and empowered to venture out and discover the treasures that lie just beyond every horizon.  Many thanks to road-weary Mike for making the trek over the divide to lend a personal touch to the evening.  It was great to re-connect face-to-face after months of hashing out the logistics of RTP's world premier tour over the phone.  What a fantastic opportunity it was to serve as Tour Manager for one of the more thought-provoking films of its genre.

Was excited to hear about potential upcoming projects for Mike, which might include films involving the Colorado Trail and the Iditarod bike race.  Looks like he'll have his hands full trying to get back into top form to brave the trails and the elements after months enduring the sedentary nature of the editing process.  No doubt he'll be ready to roll when the time comes.  Can't wait to see what's around the corner for this fresh and invigorating new voice.

REVEAL THE PATH director interview airs today!

REVEAL THE PATH set to screen at the Mesa Theater in Grand Junction on Thursday, Oct. 18th

Why do things always turn out this way?  Every intention to gain control of my life is undermined by the forces of entropy...I sit here, pajama-clad and un-showered, desperately trying to prepare for a last minute interview with Mike Dion, director of REVEAL THE PATH, scheduled to grace the Mesa Theater screen on Thursday, Oct. 18th at 7pm.

So much for clearing the mountain of dust that has been accumulating on every surface of my house.

Yes, readers, I'll gleefully be pulling this one out of my arse...but can't miss out on the opportunity to plug this fabulous film, the thinking man's answer to your typical outdoor adventure flick.

Chasing Water

The Colorado River is known worldwide and is recognized as one of the most beloved waterways on the planet.  Yet despite this, it also bears a more troubling distinction:  since 1998, after 6 million years, the Colorado River no longer reaches the Sea of Cortez.

Off the Grid Hosts Screening of WHERE SOLDIERS COME FROM

Off the Grid Films is pleased to announce the Grand Valley screening of documentarian Heather Courtney's award-winning WHERE SOLDIERS COME FROM on Wednesday, March 14th at 7 pm at the Cavalcade (201 E. Aspen St.) in Fruita, CO.  A $3 donation is requested at the door.  Seating is first-come, first-served.

Heather recently won the Independent Spirit Truer than Fiction Award for her honest and sincere portrait of life in small-town America and a group of childhood friends who unwittingly find themselves on the battlefields of Afghanistan in pursuit of the American dream.  It provides an up-close and personal look at the tolls of war on young lives and the families and communities that fostered them.

Courtney never intended to craft a film about wartime America.  Nevertheless, she bravely follows her subjects into war and embeds herself with their unit when the boys are called to active duty a year and a half into the filmmaking process.  The result is an intimate glimpse into four years in the lives of young men that will forever change them.

WHERE SOLDIERS COME FROM is decidedly unpolitical and Courtney's work has been praised by viewers and critics alike for its unfiltered portrayal.  In a war that has greatly lacked a sense of nationwide sacrifice, it gives those of us who have not been personally touched by America's overseas military actions a better understanding of the sons and daughters fighting and sacrificing on our behalf and the challenges that face them when they return.

This film is timely and important...don't miss it!

To hear an intimate account of the making of this film, go to my podcasts page and download my interview with producer/director Heather Courtney.

Daisy Bates: First Lady of Little Rock

In an age when portrayals of women in the media seem to have taken a dramatic leap backwards, films like DAISY BATES:  FIRST LADY OF LITTLE ROCK represent a refreshing and much needed change of pace.
